Brian McGee and the Hollow Speed played last night at Southpaw in Brooklyn. It’s always great to see them; Not only do I get to hang out with Brian who is one of my favorite people, but they totally rock too. They’re all super-nice and we stayed up until 5am eating bacon wrapped in pancakes.
They played with a sweet bluegrass duo called Uncle Monk, which features none other than Tommy Ramone on mandolin. And yes, Uncle Monk played a folky version of “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend,” which ruled.
My little camera—which I have been complaining about for months—had completely given up* before the show even started, so I had to take this one with my phone. It looks remarkably similar to the band shots my actual camera has been taking so I’m pretty much in the market for a new point-and-shoot with a great lens for flash-free night motion shots. I’m looking through the staggering range of Panasonic Lumix cameras with the amazing Leica lenses. I’m sure I’ll just end up buying the cheapest one so I can toss it in my bag every day guilt-free, but any opinions are appreciated.
*The camera is giving me an “Access” error on the screen and is telling me to turn it off and on again. This obviously does not work, so I googled the error this morning. The majority of the advice tells me to bang the camera REALLY HARD against the counter and it will magically start working again. I refuse to believe that there is not a scientific solution to the problem, and am once again amazed by the failure of user-generated internet advice. Are you people all insane?

I joined the Brooklyn Museum the other day, psyched to be joining a museum in my neighborhood, and mostly enticed by the tickets to the members’ preview of the Who Shot Rock and Roll photography exhibit. Because Blondie was playing at it! This is their gear, piled up behind the stage.

“City people or not, they creep out with wicker baskets at dawn, when mist is still rising from the earth, looking for humid, sun-warmed spots where mushrooms have risen overnight. True devotees are unapologetically competitive, hiding their secrets from the neighbors and slyly covering their baskets with cloth when someone approaches. At its best, mushroom hunting is a trance state, blotting out everyday concerns like the passage of time, or the way home.”

This really is a great story.

Saw this travel poster on poppytalk this morning and instantly emailed the artist (Brandon Oxendine) to see if he had any for sale.
It’s true! The food in Japan IS delicious.

UPDATE! He emailed me back and sold a print of this poster to me. The best part? He did it as part of a project for his graphic design class. So excited!

Yeah, so, there’s a mirror right by my front door. A little square one, which presumably is for checking yourself before you walk out into public. Of course when I hung it, I didn’t hang it at MY height - NO - I hung it where I would have to tiptoe, and where your average 6-foot person could utilize it comfortably. Don’t ask me why.

All of this just to explain the following:

I was just sitting on my couch, gazing at the mirror…wondering “should i move that thing down? or buy another to hang just below it? i mean, it’s fairly useless when i really can’t see myself at ALL” and then - and this is how I know I work too much - I genuinely thought for a SPLIT second, “I should just cut and paste the one that’s already there.”

Oof.
