Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic – The very first version, acoustic and recorded by Strontium 90 back before Sting and Stewart Copeland and the rest of those London boys became The Police.

My older brother and sister were all gaga over the Synchronicity tour in 1983. I listened to The Police because THEY listened to The Police and they were the coolest people I had ever met and also? I was eight and didn’t have my own stereo. But, eventually, when I started actually LISTENING to the music instead of just singing the choruses to be cool (ahem), all I heard were the drums. THE DRUMS. Good god, did that guy know how to use a hi-hat. And I learned something during 1989 that everyone already knew years before: Stewart Copeland is a genius.

So fast-forward to a few weeks ago, when I first saw Elvis Costello’s new show Spectacle. That show. THAT SHOW. It’s a cross between Inside The Actors Studio (but for bands) and The Johnny Cash TV Show. (If you haven’t seen this show you need to put it on your Netflix immediately.) And like The Johnny Cash Show, it’s instantly credible simply because the host is clearly equally as talented (or more, in a few cases) than his guests. Anyway! There’s an episode that features The Police and I was immediately drawn to Stewart Copeland. I already knew he was an AMAZING drummer, but now I realized the most important part: he is also totally insane. Swoon!

So, I’m reading his autobiography. It jumps around (it is unsurprisingly manic) but I just read a part from around when this song (above) was written. It may be super-cheesy, it may be slow and acoustic and weird to some of you, but this song and these people are about a YEAR from blowing everyone’s minds and I think that’s pretty important.

The Great Record Alphabetization of 2009.

The Great Record Alphabetization of 2009.

Behold!

At some point I realized that the wisdom and insight that’s seen me through the most formative experiences has almost always come from music, not literature. It’s always communicated something that words alone cannot. Given the central role that music has played in my life so far, (amplifying my joys, soothing my defeats, serving as foundation for my growth) how exciting might it be to expose our daughter to this most powerful and universal of art forms? It occurred to me that we could play a different record every day, provide the soundtrack for her awakening senses, let her develop a vocabulary of sounds and feelings, and rediscover things about myself and my own history along the way. I found that the question of “which record to pull off the shelf today?” seemed to have more weight to it. I approached the question more seriously, because she is hearing everything for the first time.

THE PERIOD TOO. PUT IT IN. PUT IT IN RIGHT NOW.

And after the closing parenthesis (131-133).

I almost just stood up and screamed this at my class. I wanted to before I saw this post, but now I am really tempted.

Unless you’re British, in which case logic applies in the same way it does with question/exclamation marks. Though with all the American English we tend to read, it looks irritatingly wrong to me nowadays.

I found an explanation for the variance. It’s written by an American (if the double spacing doesn’t make that glaringly obvious).

[I]t seems to be the result of historical accident. When type was handset, a period or comma outside of quotation marks at the end of a sentence tended to get knocked out of position, so the printers tucked the little devils inside the quotation marks to keep them safe and out of trouble. But apparently only American printers were more attached to convenience than logic, since British printers continued to risk the misalignment of their periods and commas.

Oh.

PUT THE COMMA INSIDE THE QUOTATION MARK.

choire:
